Pet ownership and it's health benefits
I'm sure that you've heard the saying that dog is 'man's best friend.' Well, it turns out that owning a pet can provide more of a health benefit then you might think.
A study released earlier this year from the American Heart Association shows that pet ownership can be associated in the reduction in heart disease risk factors and can show an increase in survival among patients. It also shows that dog ownership may reduce cardiovascular risk- people with dogs may engage in more physical activities, 54% of dog owners were more likely to get the recommended level of physical activity over non-dog owners. Finally, owning a pet may be associated with lower blood pressure levels, lower cholesterol levels, lower obesity rates and lower stress levels.
This being said, we definitely aren't telling you to go out and get a pet for health related purposes. As always, if you have concerns about your cardio vascular health, please consult a physician. Pet ownership benefits stretch beyond heart health, owning a pet touches your heart emotionally, among so many other things.
